So, what really happened after the rally? Can you sort out truth from fiction when the narrative spin cycle goes into overdrive?
Find out in Episode 43: Trust the Spin Doctors.
The caricatures of various "news" sources is, as the BBC might say, spot-on. And sadly this has been true for generations. As your new take on "Inherit the Wind" in general adheres closely to that original, the "news" sections here reminded me of the scenes in the old movie versions of "The Front Page" (or "His Girl Friday").
Back when one city had five or so newspapers, each "reporter" would call in breaking news events, with the paper's bias on full display. One urged readers to be ready to join the imminent socialist uprising. One WARNED readers AGAINST the imminent socialist uprising. One warned readers not to mistake this event as having anything to do with the socialist uprising. One tied every event to the mayor and sheriff's "featherbedding" and nepotism of putting incompetent family on city payroll. Of course all of them agreed that a woman who helped a sick neighbor must be a whore; and that any white guy who shot a black cop must be lynched immediately, regardless of anything else.
The Editor, Walter, shapes the 1940s priorities and headlines: No, no, never mind the Chinese earthquake for heaven's sake... Look, I don't care if there's a million dead... No, no, junk the Polish Corridor... Take all those Miss America pictures off Page Six... Take Hitler and stick him on the funny page... No, no, leave the rooster story alone—that's human interest.
